The riding centre is based on high quality work and horses with excellent blood lines, some of them trained up to Grand Prix competitions.
Some of the horses are pure breed Lusitanos skillfully trained to do flying changes (tempi changes), Spanish walk, lateral work (half pass), extended trot, canter pirouettes, piaffe, passage and work on the long lines.
Whilst training, we always have in mind the welfare and great care of our horses.
We also take horses in training with full board and give lessons as well as intensive training in Dressage, Show Jumping and Driving.
Our staff includes some of the most prominent Portuguese riders/instructors.
Hippikos facility contains:
- 1 inside arena 26x64 m (85x210 ft)
- 1 inside arena 9x 18 m (30x60 ft)
- 1 outside arena 33x76 m (110x250 ft)
- 2 outside arenas 12x24 m (40x80 ft)
- 16 boxes for dressage horses
- 9 boxes for jumping horses
- mile and mile of trails in the mountains, in the woods and in the vineyard
The day is not all lessons and work, the program also entails trail and driving riding in the countryside to experience the beauty of Portugal and to get to know your Lusitano in a more relaxed setting.
Other activities: hiking, biking, sightseeing, touristic visits to neighbourhood towns, swimming, tennis, shopping, beaches…
Accommodations are at a beautiful guesthouse inside a farm (Quinta do Pico) placed in the HIPPIKOS Equestrian Centre.
Home made meals of locally grown ingredients, and most come from the farm itself. The wine is also produced on the farm. All the meals are prepared daily for each mealtime and served family style.
The farm has comfortable rooms, an indoor swimming pool and tennis court, views of the surrounding valley and is located at the border of the National Park Peneda-Gerês, where animal species like the wild Iberian wolf, the “Garrano” (wild north Portuguese mountain horse), and many others local species are preserved from extinction. During the trail ridings one has the opportunity to meet lots of gentle Garranos.
The farm (Hippikos) is only 30 minutes from the beach, 40 minutes from Porto, 20 minutes from Ponte de Lima and 10 minutes from Braga.
