The history of Frieswijk goes back to the Stone Age. There is a complete settlement was excavated, with flints and artefacts from that period.
On the question was one not easily wet sandy feet and was still near the water of the river.

In the Middle Frieswijk grew into an important pilgrimage site, where Pope Gregory around 600 AD, laid the foundation. The sacred tree of Frieswijk, with the statue of Mary, became a household name and was certainly a century. So much so that the ministers in Deventer in 1663 complained about the Sacred Tree Frieswijk. What exactly has been we do not know, the original statue of Mary is in the church and is still in Schalkhaar every year in a procession to Frieswijk - carried her home.
Thea Beckman has been inspired by this history when writing "The Miracle of Frieswijk" whose story is set in 1470.
