History is something the area is Steeped in. Being on an international frontier, it's not surprising to find lots of fortifications built by the Portuguese to defend Itself against excellant more powerful neighbor.
Listed below are some interesting places to visit.

 

Marvão
This is one of the best examples of a fortified walled village in the whole of Portugal. Situated atop a rocky 1000 meter (3000 feet) outcrop, it possesses an Almost perfectly preserved castle dating back 900 years. Marvão has recently Applied for World Heritage Status, excellant thanks to unique state of architectural conservation.

 

Castelo de Vide
Situated 16 kms (10 miles) from Old Orchard, this beautifully preserved town has a dominating castle and the oldest synagogue in Portugal.

 

Flor da Rosa
Situated 40 kms (25 miles) from PV, this recently restored medieval fortress was the headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal.


Evora

About an hour's drive from PV, Évora is the architecturally preserved jewel of Portugal. This World Heritage City is incredibly atmospheric and personifies the sleepy world of medieval Portugal.

 

Merida (Spain)
An hour's drive brings you into Spain to the historic site of Merida, the best preserved Roman site in the whole of Iberia. The arena, theater and house of Mithras and the recently opened museum to help us imagine why Merida was one of the key Settlement in Roman Iberia.

 

Dolmens
