Portpatrick is a harbour village located on the far south-westerly tip of Scotland. It has often been described in poetic terms as the jewel in the crown of the Rhins of Galloway and its charming and beautifully kept seafront homes, pubs, shops and galleries give onto the historic harbour and spectacular westerly views.
The history of the village settlement stretches back over 500 years. The now sleepy fishing village, with its once bustling harbour, used to be the main ferry port linking Scotland to the Irish coast in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It still boasts the only non-tidal harbour between Glasgow and Liverpool and is an important sailing destination and safe haven for local fishing boats.
There are some very fine restaurants in the village and popular pubs that serve great food at lunch and dinner. It’s an easy and delightful walk across the village along the seaside promenade, with easy access to the beach opposite the mouth of the harbour,
or round the harbour past the lifeboat house and onto the Dorn
rock that guards the entrance to the harbour.
Explore and enjoy.
