And 1209 the time has come - Stade gets its own city charter.

By the Swedish conquest of 1645 Stade more and more converts to the garrison and administrative center. About 70 years is the Swedish krona Stade (1645 - 1712). The 26th May 1659 is a pitch-black day for the city. The "Great Fire" destroyed two thirds of all homes.

In the 19th Century, the growing city of its medieval core. By extending the city limits (1848 - 1852) and by giving up the fortifications (1867 - 1882) Stade receives the necessary space for new crafts and small industries. In 1972, the region is incorporated, and it starts at the Stade most impressive project: the careful restoration and reconstruction of the old town area. What has been done, several federal and state prices was worth it. And for the visitor it is a fascinating insight into the development of this city.

A stroll through the old town is a journey through history.

Water plays the main role in Stade: So also the old Hanseatic port with its pretty town houses from the 17th Century.

One of the most beautiful places is certainly the fish market with its reconstructed Holztretkran, quay walls and surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses. The trail goes to the baroque tower of the church of St. Cosmae past the town hall, the Gothic vaults have survived the great fire of 1659. The building itself is a term coined by the Dutch Renaissance and early Baroque by brick. Very close to the horse market is the armory of the 17th Century in the middle.

Hamburg - The Hanseatic tradition lives on in Stade.

Stade is a Hanseatic city. Since May 2009 Stade bears that title again officially in the city name. According to historians and archaeologists Stade was already before the award of city status and long ago in Hamburg, a major trading centers in the north. By the Middle Ages it belonged to the trade organization of the Hanseatic League.

As soon as the new port was built at the Spiegelberg, drove even the first Stader merchants to Holland and Denmark. Stade was therefore almost from the beginning of the Hanseatic League.

Sweden City - The Swedes were already there.

With the end of the 30-year war were the duchies of Bremen and Verden to Sweden. Stade was the headquarters of the Swedish government. 1645 took the powerful first governor Hans Christoph von Konigsmark its headquarters in Stade.

Born here in 1662 was also the granddaughter of the governor, Maria Aurora von Konigsmark, mistress of Augustus of Saxony and one of the finest and most brilliant women of her time.
